Erano passati pochi mesi dalla fine dell'esperienza con Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young e l'uscita del capolavoro “After The Gold Rush” quando Neil Young decise di tenere sei spettacoli al Cellar Door di Washington tra il 30 novembre e il 2 dicembre  1970 suonando due volte a serata. I brani si alternavano tra quelli dei Buffalo Springfield ("Flying on the Ground Is Wrong" e "I Am a Child") e quello dell'ultimo album uscito, ma nell'occasione interpretò anche brani che avrebbero fatto parte degli album successivi com "Old man" che rivivrà in Harvest.

Dopo due anni di tour, Young accettò un doppio concerto che avrebbe tenuto alla Carnegie Hall a dicembre e così utilizzo il Cellar Door come prova generale. Fortunatamente quei concerti furono registrati e da oggi è possibile ascoltare il "Live at the Cellar Door" anche su Deezer, in anteprima rispetto all'uscita che sarà il 10 dicembre su Cd e vinile.
